{genetically speaking}

ge·net·ics

[juh-net-iks]

noun ( used with a singular verb )

1. biology . the science of heredity, dealing with resemblances and differences of related organisms resulting from the interaction of their genes and the environment.
when hannah and i (hilary) left the grantham home last week, we both commented on how we felt the session had gone and how we hoped we had truly captured the “sweetness” that’s all packaged up in raleigh’s little already-developing personality.  as i edited the imagery we were privileged to get, i secretly marveled at how truly amazing a newborn is and how genetics and environment play such a huge role in the outcome of a child’s disposition and appearance.  as i studied the images, i could see the same quiet reflection in raleigh’s eyes that i see in both of her parents’.  she was calm and very alert…gazing at her mommy with what seemed to be sheer admiration and already curious about her surroundings.  i think i can almost predict that she’s going to love books like her grandma linda and be super intelligent like her mom and dad.  i’m predicting, that she will have lots of opportunities to throw a baseball and shoot hoops with her daddy, plenty of tennis matches with her aunt deneen, and a few backyard flag football games with her uncle grant and cousins.  one day we may even see her sitting in her grandma nancy’s salon getting her hair fixed only to hop on her grandpa laban’s motorcycle to get it all messed up.  i can already see her crossing the finish line for her first mega-marathon with her aunt nikki and mom cheering her across the finish line!   i’ll bet she learns a lot about eating healthy and staying fit…and i think she’ll have lots of internal motivation and be very well-rounded.  i’m not prophesying…just “genetically speaking”.

{wake josiah}

little wake josiah was born into a family of born-again Christians who thoughfully selected his name.  at a time when the world seems to be falling apart and turmoil abounds on every side, a little “watchman” has been given the breath of life.  wake is an old english-derived name which means “watchman”.   the name “josiah” is a biblical name transliterated from the hebrew word “yo’shiya” which means “whom Jehovah heals”, however in english it is sometimes said to mean “fire of the Lord.”  you can read about josiah in the book of 2 kings and 2 chronicles.  josiah became the king of judah at the age of 8 and instituted major reforms, calling the people of God to leave idol worship and serve the one true God, Jehovah.

some time back, wake’s parents and big brother commissioned us to capture some images of their family at an old church.  we took pictures of them singing and reading the bible together.   since wake wasn’t yet conceived at that time…his mommy wanted to make sure that we captured him with a special heirloom bible.  congratulations holli and sy…I know little wake will grow not only in stature, but also in the grace and knowledge of our Lord!

{carrying clemmie}

we are always highly honored when a bride and/or groom select us to document their wedding day…it’s an even greater honor when they hire us again to capture a growing family! becki was a vision on the day of hers and donald’s marriage, carrying herself with sophistication and style. we knew before her maternity session that she would be carrying clemmie (although ‘in utero’) with the same southern class. we are already planning ahead for the newborn session and have a hunch that baby clemmie will be beautiful and refined like her mommy and polite and classy like her daddy. can’t wait to see them carrying clemmie as she grows!
